Orticolario: Nature, Art, and Beauty on Lake Como

Every year, during the first week of October, Cernobbio turns into a living garden thanks to Orticolario, an event that blends nature, art, and design. Since its first edition in 2009, it has become a must for flower lovers, gardening enthusiasts, and travelers seeking inspiration. The setting is nothing short of magical: the park and halls of Villa Erba, one of the most prestigious historic villas on Lake Como, dressed in colors, scents, and creative installations.

More than a flower show

Orticolario is not just a plant fair. It’s a sensory journey that encourages visitors to experience gardens as places of wonder and creativity. Each year, the event is shaped around a theme, interpreted by artists, designers, and landscape architects who create imaginative installations throughout the villa’s park. Walking among centuries-old trees, visitors discover rare plants, artistic craftsmanship, and innovative ideas for bringing beauty into outdoor spaces.

The program also includes workshops, cultural talks, family-friendly activities, and a wide marketplace featuring nurseries and artisans from all over Italy and beyond. It’s a true celebration for anyone who loves the natural world.

Villa Erba: a stage of elegance

The charm of Orticolario is amplified by its venue, Villa Erba. Built in the late 19th century for the Erba family and later connected to the famous film director Luchino Visconti, the villa is a masterpiece of elegance with frescoed halls and grand terraces overlooking the lake.

Its century-old park, filled with monumental trees and lawns stretching to the water, provides a breathtaking backdrop for the event. Today, Villa Erba is also an international hub for cultural events, exhibitions, and congresses.

Discovering Cernobbio and Lake Como

Attending Orticolario is also the perfect chance to explore Cernobbio, a refined lakeside town known for its villas, gardens, and romantic promenade. From here, it’s easy to reach Como or set off by boat to discover other iconic towns like Bellagio, Varenna, or Menaggio. Whether strolling through its charming squares or enjoying a lakeside aperitivo, Cernobbio offers an authentic taste of Lake Como life.
